(Try to) Fly The Kite in Marina Barrage

I never flew any kites before this, and I never knew whether I could fly a kite or not. Although we love watching the colorful kites with beautiful shapes on the sky above us, the idea of flying kites was never came to us. Firstly because kites are so expensive in here, and secondly because we were not so sure whether we were skillful enough to fly any kites.

So we were very excited when I did my usual cleaning on the top closet and found out that we still had 2 kites that we never used before. I remembered that I got them from the Upicnic 2 years ago.  Since then, I jut put the kites in the closet and never even remembered to fly them.

So on a very hot Saturday afternoon, we decided to finally try flying the kites in the best place to fly kites in Singapore (in my opinion of course): Marina Barrage Rooftop. Why I said it is the best? Because it is located in the third floor (quite high from the ground) and the wind is (almost) always very strong all the time. There are some parks to fly the kites, but of course there are limitation because there are high trees in the parks. In Marina Barrage rooftop, there are no trees at all.

Drink from the water fountain is also provided in the first and third floor, and there are some shaded areas for people who just want to sit and watch the kites fly high on the sky.

This place can be very crowded during weekend especially in the evening where many people are not juts flying their kites, but also having picnics with mats and food and drink everywhere. Luckily, there was still lots of spaces for us when we came at 2 pm (in the middle of the super hot sun……………so no wonder not many people were around, right?).

It was easy to get a parking spot just inside Marina Barrage since it wasn’t too crowded, and the best thing is:  parking is free…………hooray for that!

Oh, and don’t forget the breathtaking view from the rooftop that you will see while flying the kites in here: blue clear water, big ships, tall buildings, the big Singapore Flyer, and of course the super beautiful blue clear sky above. Don’t forget to bring hats and sunglasses as it can get very hot on the afternoon. Bringing food, at least snack, is also a must as one can get very hungry after chasing the kites, running in the green grass, and try extra hard to make the kites fly high on the sky. Seriously, for amateurs like us, flying the kites was not an easy job to do.

Preparing The Kite

Preparing the kites, we brought 2 kites that day

Kite Flying

This was absolutely not easy at all. We tried and tried and tried and still, the kites won’t fly high

Ok, so they finally flew…………….but not so high and were easily fell off to the ground

Even lil one was eager to try…..

How to fly the kites so they’re steady on the sky like these beautiful kites?

Daddy thought that the kites were not so good in quality that made us failed to fly them high in the sky. But I said it probably not, since I looked around and I saw many people with beautiful kites were not able to fly their kites too. It was probably also the wind and the techniques too. So we tried again………..and again…………..and again…………..

And yes, finally our kites flew (quite) high in the sky…………….

Falling in love with the beautiful view

Fly Kite

A good way to spend our weekend

But for only a short time………..the kites won’t go steady like any other kites. But never mind, we still had so much fun trying to fly our kites.

Yes, I did it too…………my kites flew high for a while before it fell off to the ground again, but I was so happy because I could fly my kite……………..so no wonder that some people can be addicted in kites flying, because it is so much fun spending hours chasing the wind, try to fly the kites, and finally watch our kites up above the sky.

Finally, we visited Kites Store in the first floor and thought of buying a new one, but it was very expensive that I decided that we should try to buy somewhere else and come back again someday.

We’ll be back………………!!!

Hi there. I'm from Indonesia but now live quite far away from my home country. I love cooking for my family. I learned how to cook for the first time from my mom and I believe that mom's cooking is always the best, and I do hope that my son will feel the same too even though he grows up so fast. I love Indonesian food as I grew up with it, and I promise to myself that my son, although he doesn't live in Indonesia right now, will always like and enjoy authentic Indonesian food. I make this blog so that my family will always remember our togetherness and happy time that we had, are having, and will have when we eat together and have good memories about a mother's love through her dishes. Hopefully these recipes will help other people to make healthy home cooked dishes for their families.

  1. kalo main layangan emang tergantung anginnya banget ya. kalo anginnya on and off juga susah terbangnya… paling bisa tapi gak terlalu tinggi. 😀
